Quite likely the most ludicrous transfer story to emerge since the transfer window closed has been quickly shot down.
With contract talks with Barcelona said to have stalled, The Star published an article on Sunday entitled: "Andres Iniesta sparks battle between Manchester United and City."
It stated: "The current situation is certain to alert City and United, where Moyes insists his club will always be interested in the world’s top players."
Conjecture, speculation, rumour - no facts in the piece to back up any interest from either Manchester club.
And now World Cup winner Iniesta himself has put the rumours out of their misery.
He has assured fans an agreement will be reached, and was quoted by Marca:
"My wish is to finish here, and it's the club's as well. There is no complication.
"This is the best place where I can be. I'm 29, I know that I still have a few years of good football in me, and I want to live them here.
"It's not about money, it's about the wishes that I have. It's not a Barça – Iniesta war."
United were linked with both Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas over the summer but signed neither, and claims they or City would sign arguably the world's best midfielder was always fanciful at best.
A complete non-starter from day one?
