On this day: After 354 minutes Giroud finally scores, Townsend shines and Sahin at the double

On the 26th September 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 26th September 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 26th September 2012

That’s the way you Giroud it

Just like it was this week in 2013, a year ago it was League Cup fixtures week in 2012 - and all the Premier League’s big boys were in action. Possibly the most impressive performance of the night came from Arsenal - who thrashed Coventry City 6-1 in their match.

Goals from Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andrei Arshavin, Theo Walcott (2) and Ignasi Miquel sealed the victory.

It was the goal of French international striker Giroud that caught the most attention however - it was his first for Arsenal.

It had taken him 354 minutes to score the goal, his first since a £12 million summer switch from Montpellier.

This season has been far more productive, with Giroud scoring five in eight so far this campaign.

Man about Town-send

Andros Townsend stole the show as Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Carlisle United away from home. A much changed side from Andre Villas-Boas saw Townsend get a chance to shine - and that is exactly what he did.

However Townsend was not getting much of a chance to shine at any other time - so was loaned out to QPR in January.

He went on to be superb for the club and is now a fixture in the Spurs first-team.

This is what I can do, just Sahin

It was Nuri Sahin who put Liverpool through to the next round. The Turkish midfielder, who was the subject of a transfer to-and-fro in the summer between Liverpool and Arsenal, scored both goals as they downed Premier League West Brom 2-1.

But just a few months later, Sahin was considered a flop at the club and was allowed to cancel his loan spell from Real Madrid.

He left thanking god he was away from Brendan Rodgers, and is now starring for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
