Today saw Arsenal host a Q & A session with many of Arsenal’s first-teamers - including Ryo Miyaichi, Santi Cazorla and, the one all the fans wanted to talk too, Mesut Ozil.
The hashtag #AskOzil was trending nationwide as thousands of Gunners fans tried to get a word with their new favourite star.
The questions ranged from who the joker in the dressing room is (Lukas Podolski if you were wondering), where Ozil likes to go on vacation and who the best player he has ever played with is (interestingly, Sergio Ramos).
One of the questions was as follows …
To which Ozil responded …
Mesut says: "I don't just want to say one player, I am surprised by the technical quality of the whole team" #AskOzil— Arsenal.com (@Arsenal) September 26, 2013
It is good to hear that Arsenal are respected already by their new player. When he arrived for such a vast sum of money, more than any of the other players cost the Gunners, there was certainly a threat that he could have been pedestaled to the point of isolation.
But his humble attitude came out here, as we are sure that is what he meant by ‘surprised’.
Pleasantly surprised that throughout this Arsenal team there is a philosophy of playing good football - and that the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and even Laurent Koscielny would have caught Ozil off guard with their technical abilities. This should be taken as a blessing from the German international, not a hint at anything more sinister.
The fact is Arsenal are a team with superb control, passing ability and technical prowess from the back forward, even Wojciech Szczesny fancies himself an outfield player given the poise he can sometimes demonstrate on the ball.
Ozil now comes in and acts as that extra spark. For all the wonderful football they can play, you see it often that they do not have that killer ball in their locker.
Ozil brings that to The Emirates, that ability to thread through an eye of a needle after good work from the whole team.
And he clearly recognises the importance of his team-mates own ability judging by that answer.
