The Ivorian never managed to live up to his £10.8 million price-tag and his poor decision making, goal return and often clumsy demeanour on the field of play was never much of an endearing factor to the Arsenal faithful.
But at 26-years-old there is still plenty of time ahead of his career, so there was always going to be a degree of interest in his services this summer. When Rudi Garcia took over at Roma, the former Lille boss saw an opportunity to reacquaint himself with a player who experienced great success under him in the North of France.
He joined the Giallorossi for £8 million - almost a £3 million loss - and yesterday, before Roma put their 100% record on the line he was speaking of his ‘better relationship’ with Garcia compared to Wenger - and how he was happy at Arsenal, but now happier in the Italian capital.
And the fans seem to like him as well, despite his occasional erraticism - Arsenal fans will know what I am talking about.
But yesterday there was nothing erratic whatsoever about his finish against Sampdoria in Genoa. Yes, Roma continue to maintain their excellent form with a 100% record continuing into a sixth week of the Italian season - quite incredible when you think about it.
And Gervinho is finally off the mark.
He was unleashed down the left hand side before slotting in coolly with his left boot - to seal all three points in a 2-0 win.
Unfortunately for him though, his thunder was stolen slightly by a wonderful opening goal by centre-back Mehdi Benatia, another new signing. The bullish defender danced his way beyond tackles before sliding the ball into the net for 1-0:
