Liverpool go into this weekend’s match against Sunderland looking to recover after back-to-back defeats.
Liverpool were beaten at home by Southampton last weekend before a League Cup defeat at Manchester United, which has left the side need to respond well, with an impressive result against Sunderland this weekend.
Liverpool did produce some good patches of football against United at Old Trafford, which could tempt the boss to stick with the same side that started that match.
Here is the side Brendan Rodgers may go with.
GK – Simon Mignolet
The Belgian goalkeeper has been good this season since arriving from the club Liverpool face this weekend. He makes good saves from different angles and position and his distribution is consistent.
RB – Kolo Toure
Rodgers is unlikely to slot Andre Wisdom in at right-back because of how solid Kolo Toure has been in the position. His experience helps him to compensate for a lack of pace and he plays a big role in keeping the back four organised.
CB – Martin Skrtel
The Slovakian is one of the best centre backs that Liverpool have. There are still lingering rumours suggesting he could move on this winter but he seems happy and he’s producing some of his best form.
CB – Mamadou Sakho
If Daniel Agger is not fully fit following a rib problem, then French defender Sakho will continue to fill in. He’s shown glimpses of his best form in Liverpool’s back four but it’s also obvious sometimes that he’s not all that used to English football.
LB – Jose Enrique
Enrique is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League. Defensively he’s solid and his frame gives him good strength and he offers a vital attacking role going forward, creating extra width on the left hand side.
RM – Jordan Henderson
Henderson is likely to continue on the right of the team. He’s solid when he plays out wide and he’s naturally comfortable when he moves into the centre. He breaks up the play and makes good runs from different positions.
CM – Steven Gerrard
Gerrard will be key for Liverpool in forcing a result in this game. His leadership will also be very important if Sunderland get on top or get their noses in front early, plus he provides an obvious goal threat.
CM – Lucas
Lucas will sit and hold, playing in front of the defence and trying to break up any play and momentum that Sunderland build. He’s been superb this season playing the holding role and controlling the tempo of Liverpool’s play.
LM – Victor Moses
Moses has looked very good since he joined the club on loan from Chelsea. He’s superb as a winger but he can tuck inside into a central midfield position if Liverpool want to replicate the 3-5-2 they played against Manchester United.
ST – Luis Suarez
Suarez looked fit and sharp against Manchester United and he’s only going to get better. He can drift out to the left but he’ll also make a variety of direct runs from all positions in the space between Sunderland’s midfield and defence.
ST – Daniel Sturridge
Sturridge will always be in the side until he gives Rodgers a reason to drop him. He can play on the shoulder of the defence and rotate positions with Suarez, as he’s equally effective making those runs from the top of midfield.
What do you think? Should Aspas play? Should Wisdom slot in at right-back?
