After the summer saga surrounding Luis Suarez's future, what are the chances of him signing a new deal?
Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has said that they will sit down at the end of the season with Luis Suarez and his agent Pere Guardiola to discuss the future – and perhaps the possibility of signing a new contract.
The question is, does this make this season all the more bigger for Liverpool, and what would make Suarez agree to terms?
For much of the summer he was trying to force a move away from Anfield by trying to attract the interest of Real Madrid, then Arsenal put a bid in – so he tried to move there. In effect, anything to get Champions League football immediately.
If that is anything to go by, if he does sign on the dotted line again for Liverpool, it would mean Liverpool have returned to Europe’s premier competition.
This is a problem for the club as well as for Suarez – that getting into the Champions League is going to get harder and harder every year. Whilst Liverpool will always have a rich history to ‘sell’ to try and land the best players, history doesn’t allow the best players to play in the best club competition the world has to offer.
There is also the issue of a release clause that was talked about over the summer, if he hasn’t put in a transfer request by then, surely a release clause would be demanded by Suarez and his agent if he were to sign another deal? It just wouldn’t make sense making all that noise for a whole summer, then to say ‘I’m actually OK with that,’ regarding the current conditions in his contract.
If he does manage to agree to a new long-term contract when the time comes, and Liverpool haven’t returned to the Champions League after a five year wait, then they will have done very well.
