Holtby is not Ozil but is he on the rise?

After the 0-4 victory over Aston Villa Lewis Holtby was praised in his native Germany. But is it a sign of a permanent run in the side?

“German playmakers are quite the zeitgeist in North London.” the Times wrote about yesterday’s Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur, meaning that Lewis Holtby’s great performance is just another example for the success of German players in Premier League.

They added: “Holtby’s destruction of Aston Villa last night was so artful, so orchestrated, that Ozil would no doubt have been proud to call it his own.”

One shouldn’t critique the time-honoured and highly distinguished newspaper but Lewis Holtby is by far not in same world-class calibre as Mesut Ozil is. Their only similarities might be their former club FC Schalke from Germany’s Ruhr valley where they haven’t even played at the same tim and their creative instincts.

Tottenham must not allow Lewis Holtby to leave

In his tenure at FC Schalke Lewis Holtby was lacking speed and endurance from time to time. Some were questioning his attitude and his mental toughness. It was no surprise that FC Schalke lent him to two different clubs in his four years there.

But the 23-year-old obviously got his mind right in his last year at FC Schalke which was rewarded with a new contract abroad.

Yesterday in a 0-4 victory over Aston Villa FC Tottenham Hotspur’s Fans saw Holtby’s potential. He was all over the field and shone with three assists. A great demonstration of Holtby’s abilities as one German football magazine puts it.

And that was without seeing one of his many skills - scoring from long range.

Maybe yesterday’s performance is the beginning of his rise. In the next games including the crucial encounter with Chelsea he certainly will be in contention to start but Lewis Holtby has still a lot to prove.

What do you think? Will Lewis Holtby rise and establish himself with the Spurs?
