The feisty Italian midfielder was thought to be toying with the idea of a move away from Roma during the summer, with Manchester United one of the interested parties as they looked to invest in a midfield enforcer.
Manchester United’s interest has been confirmed by Capello who says the Old Trafford club consulted him over the player, eventually making their interest known to Roma.
“Had I been in the shoes of De Rossi then I would have joined Manchester United. I would have wanted to go to a club where the ambition is very high. A few months ago [Manchester United boss] David Moyes asked me for an opinion of the player, an opinion which was positive,” Capello told Fox Sport.
Roma decided to hang onto their skipper and United subsequently went on to go after Cesc Fabregas of Barcelona and Ander Herrera of Athletic Bilbao to add to their midfield, before eventually signing Everton’s Marouane Fellaini on the final day of the transfer window.
The 30-year-old now looks set to spend the rest of his career in Serie A, which is a shame because he’d have undoubtedly been a popular player in England fir his aggressive, typically English style of play.
