A round up of the latest news and gossip about Liverpool football club.
Brendan Rodgers is demanding a response from Liverpool after the side’s first Premier League defeat of the season against Southampton. Rodgers has suggested the only positive is that Luis Suarez is now available.
“I think that is the big positive from today is the fact he is back and is available from next week. Sometimes players like him can make the difference so it is going to be great to have him back and a real boost to have him back,” said the Liverpool boss.
Liverpool legend Alan Hansen is not so optimistic, suggesting that he expects Suarez will ask to leave the club again next year if Liverpool fail to get into the top four. He is also predicting Suarez’s return to the team to be overshadowed by controversy.
Rodgers has also stuck by under fire forward Iago Aspas. Some have started to question whether Aspas is good enough to fill the void created by Philippe Coutinho’s recent injury but Rodgers has backed the Spaniard to eventually start scoring goals and producing a return.
Kolo Toure has revealed he thinks Luis Suarez is ready for a return to first team action. Suarez is likely to feature in the League Cup match against Manchester United this week in what would be his first appearance of the season.
“Luis is a fantastic player – a top striker who can score a goal at any time. He will strengthen the team,” said the defender.
Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has revealed he wants to go back to PSG at some point in the future. Sakho moved to Anfield in a £15 million deal on transfer deadline day and gave a speech before PSG’s match against Monaco yesterday.
“I'm very proud to come here tonight. I remember when I was young, I was up there, there in the stands and watched PSG play. I have now turned a page. My story with PSG isn't over yet,” said Sakho.
Reports are still lingering of Juventus’ apparent interest in signing former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso. The Spanish midfielder could be available for around £5 million with sources in Italy unsurprisingly suggesting the Old Lady are the favourites to get him.
One player who won’t be leaving the club until next summer is striker Luis Suarez. Suarez was strongly linked with moves to Arsenal and Real Madrid over the summer, but Florentino Perez has come out and said Real Madrid will not be making a move for Liverpool’s star forward.
Liverpool youngster Suso has continued his good form with loan side Almeria. The young midfielder scored a superb goal over the weekend in the La Liga match against Levante.
In other news, on loan Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina became the first goalkeeper ever to save a Mario Balotelli penalty over the weekend. Reina saved Balotelli’s spot kick as Napoli secured an important win against AC Milan in Serie A.
