The Manchester City spine
It is hard to single out one player in the Manchester City team after their convincing win over Manchester United. But the spine of Kompany, Toure and Aguero were massive factors in giving City’s fans the bragging rights until the sides meet again, in a performance full of power, pace, class and goals.
It looked like an afternoon where Spurs would be frustrated by Cardiff keeper David Marshall after he made a string of wonderful saves to keep the scoreline goalless. But into stoppage time and Erik Lamela's ball across the area allowed Paulinho to pull off an improvised finish to give Spurs a precious win which allows them to keep pace with North London rivals Arsenal at the top of the table.
Many people will make the case for Leighton Baines ahead of Lukaku given his two wonderful free-kicks, but Lukaku’s contribution was both decisive and gutsy. As well as managing to nod home a winner to give Everton back-to-back wins, he also got a nasty knock on the head for his troubles.
With the talisman that is Christian Benteke picking up an injury, Paul Lambert was forced to throw Libor Kozak into the action towards the end of the first half. Kozak had a chance to put Villa in front before having a poor effort saved by John Ruddy but was immediately given another chance by Gabby Agbonlahor, which Kozak took – eventually giving Villa three points.
His header was perhaps the coupon buster of the weekend as Southampton sprung a surprise win against Liverpool at Anfield. Though it was comical the way Liverpool went about conceding the corner that led up to the goal, it was still a very good header, and his defensive partnership with Jose Fonte kept Liverpool at bay.
