Five players eager to impress for Tottenham against Aston Villa

Andre Villas-Boas has admitted that he will shuffle his pack for the Capital One Cup clash tonight, with a number of players given the chance to shine.

Tottenham travel to Birmingham to take on Aston Villa in the Capital One Cup tonight, two days after their last-gasp win over Cardiff on Sunday.

Andre Villas-Boas has berated the fixture list and suggested that he will rotate his squad significantly for the game at Villa Park.

As such there are a number of players that will get the chance to impress, with strong performances from these five potentially pushing them into starting XI consideration for Saturday’s clash with Chelsea in the Premier League.

Erik Lamela

Tottenham’s record signing is being broken into first-team action slowly but surely after a summer move from Roma, and is likely to feature here.

The Argentina international faces a battle with homegrown talent Andros Townsend for a place on the right wing, and has shown glimpses of why he was brought to White Hart Lane in his early days at the club.

A strong performance against Villa could well see him trusted to start against Chelsea on Saturday.

Vlad Chiriches

Probably the least spoken-about of Tottenham’s seven new summer signings, the Romania international centre-half is expected to be handed his debut in the clash.

With Younes Kaboul picking up a knock in the win over Cardiff and an argument that Jan Vertonghen could be shifted wide to solve the left-back dilemma, a place at the heart of Tottenham’s defence is up for grabs. Chiriches will be keen to show Villas-Boas and the Spurs faithful that he is ready for Premier League football.

Lewis Holtby

The Germany international has not been given a consistent run of games in the starting XI since moving to north London in January, but has shown that he is a technically able playmaker when featuring.

Although Christian Eriksen appears to be the main man in the number ten role for Tottenham, another impressive performance by Holtby could see Villas-Boas consider starting him from the left against Chelsea at the weekend.

Still building up his match fitness after a long layoff last season, the Brazil international has a fight on his hands to command a regular starting berth after summer recruitment.

With Eriksen’s inclusion, Villas-Boas has been playing a 4-2-3-1 formation of late, with Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Sandro has a chance here to remind Tottenham what he is capable of and push for a place in the boiler room this weekend.

Jermain Defoe

With Roberto Soldado starting all of Spurs’ Premier League games so far this term, Defoe looks likely to be left to try and star from the bench and in cup competitions. He bagged a brace against Tromso in the Europa League on Thursday and will play here if he shakes off a slight groin strain.

With important games on the horizon for England also, Defoe needs to take every chance he gets at Tottenham.
