When Mourinho arrived the pair were in fact linked with an exit this summer, and we all laughed - I bet Luiz and Mata wish they were at Barcelona and Tottenham respectively now.
Mourinho clearly feels the pair are not disciplined enough defensively and in terms of work rate to play the way he wants - and despite the recent blip, Mourinho can wake up this morning and look at the Premier League table with a wry smile - Chelsea are top of the pile, so who are we to question his motives.
That could all change today, depending on results from the North London pair of Arsenal and Spurs - who can both leapfrog Chelsea with victory - as can Manchester United.
And if Luiz and Mata get together to watch any of those games on the telly this afternoon, I have no doubt they will do so with something verging on more excitement than they did watching their own team yesterday evening.
When looking to see the reaction on Twitter to the decision to drop both Mata and Luiz from the squad entirely, I stumbled across a great picture on the Twitter account, handle @NoorPatty which demonstrated just how despondent the pair were in the crowd.
Luiz looks like he is chewing a wasp and not even his comedic hairstyle can make him look jollier. As for Mata, he has his head in his hands and can barely watch as a position he called his own last year now seems desperately out of reach …
lol look at Mata and Luiz watching from the stands. pic.twitter.com/g5LuniMVR8— Noor Patty (@NoorPatty) September 21, 2013
