On this day: Wilshere returns after 14 months and Abramovich meddles ... again

Wilshere Cazorla

On the 20th September 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 20th September 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 20th September 2012…

Return of the Jack

This time last year was a pretty good one as far as Arsenal fans were concerned. Jack Wilshere returned to action for Arsenal after 14 months out of action with a series of ankle and foot injuries.

Wilshere had not played since July 2011, but made tentative steps towards stepping out on the pitch again after taking part in full training with the first-team.

Arsene Wenger said:

‘’We are so pleased that Jack is back in full training. It’s been 14 months and that’s a long time for someone at his age. It’s an eternity, but it’s great news.’’

It was a month later before Wilshere made his comeback, in a 1-0 win against QPR and he went on to play 35 times for the club - and now his injury problems seem to be in the past.

Emmanuel Frimpong also returned to training … but nobody seemed to care as much.

Roman invasion

On Tuesday night it was revealed that Roman Abramovich had gone in to the Chelsea dressing room after they threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to FC Basel at Stamford Bridge - a year ago he did almost exactly the same thing.

After his side threw away a 2-0 lead against Juventus in the Champions League, he reportedly confronted the players at the training ground to inquire as to why it happened.

Some things never change.

Feg-ugly display

According to the Daily Mail Manchester United were ready to join the race for Valencia’s Algerian playmaker Sofiane Feghouli this time last year.

We hope not, because the player eventually stayed at Valencia and was one of the players who stood out for being utterly abysmal against Swansea City in their humbling 3-0 defeat last night.
