Tottenham Hotspur morning news: Deal for Mata still possible, AVB slams fixture list

A round up of the key news stories centring around Tottenham Hotspur this morning.

Tottenham will face competition from Italian sides Napoli and Juventus if they want to poach Chelsea star Juan Mata.

The Spaniard has failed to feature regularly from the start for Chelsea this season, leading to suggestions that Jose Mourinho has issued with the play maker.

The rumours seem to have originated in Portugal with sources there suggesting the North London club are still interested despite the recent arrival of Christian Eriksen.

Andre Villas-Boas has attacked the fixture list suggesting it’s dangerous for his side to play two games within three days over the weekend into next week.

Spurs play Cardiff City on Sunday before a League Cup tie against Aston Villa just two days later on the Tuesday.

“How can a game be scheduled after two days? It immediately puts players’ careers at risk from injuries. I find it absolutely incredible. The second day of recovery is the most dangerous to pick up an injury. It’s bad if that is not taken into account,” said AVB.

Spurs midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson says he never considered leaving the club over the summer.

Sunderland and Liverpool were among the clubs reportedly interested in offering the 24-year-old a way out of White Hart Lane.

“I wasn't close to leaving. I came here was to play for a big club. When I joined I knew there would be loads of players and competition,” said Sigurdsson.
