Arsenal latest: Boss surprised with Ramsey and Patricio interest

News and gossip from the past 24 hours at The Emirates.

Arsenal have taken their first three points of this season Champions League Group Stages at the first attempt - after beating Marseille 2-1 at the Stade Velodrome.

Theo Walcott scored along with the in-form Aaron Ramsey - with a late penalty from Jordan Ayew setting up a jittery finish.

In the groups other game it was Napoli who came out on top at the Stadio San Paulo against Borussia Dortmund. Rafa Benitez’s men also won 201 - with Lorenzo Insigne and Gonzalo Higuain the goal-scorers.

Meanwhile the under-19’s also won in the UEFA Youth League against Marseille. They won 4-1, with Serge Gnabry bagging a brace. The other goals came from Alex Iwobi and Jack Jebb.

Arsene Wenger has spoken of his surprise at the goal return from current star player Aaron Ramsey. Ramsey scored his sixth goal in seven games this season in Marseille, in what was Arsenal’s 10th away win on the bounce.

Wenger said:

"Honestly, I didn't expect him to score so many but he has improved his passing and technical quality. That is the most important thing, because he is always in a good position in the box. Scoring is a bit cyclic, but for me the most important thing is the quality of his game."

Arsenal apparently missed out on Portuguese international goalkeeper Rui Patricio this summer. The Sporting Lisbon stopper was linked with several moves this summer - with AS Monaco also heavily linked with his signature.

However Patricio ended up going nowhere.

Juventus boss Antonio Conte is the main target should Arsene Wenger decide not to stay with the club at the end of the season, according to reports in Italy. The Bianconeri supremo has won the Scudetto two years in a row with Juve - while he has also masterminded promotions for Bari and Siena in the past.

Wenger’s contract expires at the end of the season, and he has not yet confirmed he will stay.
