Tottenham players celebrate Holtby's 23rd birthday - by beating him up

Lewis Holtby was the victim of birthday beats today in a light-hearted training session for the North London club.

Things have not quite gone to plan for Lewis Holtby since he arrived at Tottenham Hotspur in January for a cut-price deal from Schalke 04. The young German midfielder has struggled to adapt to the physical side of the English game, performing far better in the Europa League than he has in the Premier League.

He has also had a few fitness concerns to overcome, but now fighting fit he will be raring to be a part of the Andre Villas-Boas revolution for the rest of the campaign.

And while the press may have linked him with a loan move away this summer it appears he is certainly a fully integrated member of the Tottenham first team - as he found out today.

Word must have got out that it was his birthday, never a good thing to land on the day if training.

The end result was that his 23rd birthday today ended up with the entire Tottenham Hotspur first team bundling him to the floor and giving him some ‘birthday beats’.

It all seemed to be in good gest, and highlights was seems to be a generally positive atmosphere in the Tottenham camp ahead of their fixture with Norwegian outfit Tromso SK at White Hart Lane tomorrow night, in which Holtby is expected to feature.

That is if his team-mates haven’t injured him!

But it all seemed to be OK afterwards for poor Holtby, possibly one of the shortest lads on the team, it must have been frightening having big lads like Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul or Jan Vertonghen coming at him. So Brazilian henchman Sandro gave him an embracing birthday hug afterwards, to make it all better.
