'Luis can do a Cantona', and Alberto treble for under 21's - Liverpool morning news

Also features Carragher and Suarez and pursuit of Traore

Manager Brendan Rodgers said the team will ‘fight aggressively’ to stay top of the league after returning to the summit following a 2-2 draw with Swansea City on Monday night, with the manager pleased with the level of consistency shown by his side.

Rodgers said: ‘It’s only four games in, but we’ve had four tough games and we have only lost once in the last 16 games so we are getting a level of consistency and that was the biggest thing for me.

Liverpool’s under 21’s came back from 2-0 down against Sunderland to win 5-2 at Anfield last night. Liverpool fielded new signing Tiago Ilori, along with some faces familiar with the first team in Jordon Ibe, Martin Kelly, Raheem Sterling and Luis Alberto.

Alberto managed to score a hat-trick and put himself in contention for Saturday’s game with Southampton with question marks still remaining over Phillipe Coutinho’s fitness. Raheem Sterling and striker Jack Dunn got the other goals for Liverpool.

Liverpool legend turned pundit Jamie Carragher has said that Luis Suarez will come straight back into the Liverpool team no matter how well the side is playing, and that it will be a question of building up the striker’s fitness.

Suarez is in line for a return against Manchester United in the Capital One Cup next week at Old Trafford, and Carragher hopes the Uruguayan will play as big a part as Eric Cantona did against Liverpool back in 1995 when he returned from a lengthy ban.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Carragher said: ‘The manager will have a system but when you have a player that good you look at your best players and say ‘they have to play’.

‘We had that Cantona one, didn’t we, where he came back after a long time out and scored? Hopefully Luis does the same!’

In transfer news, Liverpool may have to fight Galatasaray if they want to land the Anzhi Mackhachkala striker Lacina Traore. According to the Daily Express, manager Brendan Rodgers has long been an admirer of the Ivorian.
