When Chelsea announced their team line-up for their Champions League opener against FC Basel, there was one glaring omission.
Fernando Torres, Chelsea's record signing, was not only left out of the starting line-up, but he failed to make the bench.
Samuel Eto'o was preferred up front, and Demba Ba was preferred on the bench.
As yet there has been no confirmation of any injury to the Spaniard, and it is believed he has simply been left out by manager Jose Mourinho for footballing reasons.
Speaking on SkySports, pundit Jamie Carragher who played alongside him at Liverpool has labelled the snub 'embarrassing' for the striker.
"It's embarrassing. For a player they paid that much money for £50 million it does not look good."
Carragher went onto express his doubts over 32-year-old Samuel Eto'o's sharpness, highlighting how this only makes Torres' situation worse.
Of course what Carragher does not mention is that days of Torres being considered a £50 million striker are long consigned to memory, and this snub is not entirely unsurprising considering how Mourinho has juggled his strikers this season.
Nonetheless it is just one more unhappy chapter to add to Torres' mixed bag of a Chelsea career.
What do you think of Torres being dropped? Is Carragher right?
