Liverpool latest: Including Coutinho injury blow and Alonso move rumours develop

A round up of the latest news and gossip centring around Liverpool.

Liverpool have been dealt a blow through the news midfielder Philippe Coutinho requires shoulder surgery. The news means the Premier League leaders will be without one of their main attacking players until next month, with a return predicted closer to November.

Reports from Portugal have brought back the debate over whether former midfielder Xabi Alonso could be in line for a return to Liverpool. Portuguese newspaper Record has claimed that Real Madrid may be willing to let the Spaniard leave the Bernabeu this winter. The report suggests he’ll cost £5 million.

Brendan Rodgers has revealed he believes his side are ready to fight for the Premier League title, following a superb start to the season which has seen them drop only two points.

“The more you're up there at the top, the more aggression and will and desire you have to stay there. It's only four games in but we've had four tough games and we have only lost once in the last 17 games now,” said Rodgers.

He’s also revealed that he feels the imminent return of Luis Suarez is something that will only aid Liverpool’s title hopes. Suarez is set to return to first team duty for the club in the League Cup tie against Manchester United next week.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has heaped praise onto Victor Moses, who grabbed his first goal for the club on loan from Chelsea in that match against the Swans.

“It was great for Victor to score. It was a good performance from him and hopefully he keeps it going,” said the Belgian.

However, former Reds star John Aldridge says the current side needs to work harder to achieve a solid 90 minute performance. Liverpool produced some superb football last Monday against Swansea, but Aldridge has suggested the side needs to dig a little deeper to grind out results.

Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio has described Fabio Borini as a top quality forward who he has no worries about ahead of a difficult season. Di Canio has cited the Italian’s days with Swansea as proof that he can improve and score a lot of goals at Sunderland before he returns to Anfield next summer.

Another Liverpool player attracting praise is youngster Luis Alberto. The young Spaniard bagged a hat-trick for the club’s Under-21 side as they comfortably defeated Sunderland 5-2 at Anfield.

In transfer news, Galatasaray are expected to challenge Liverpool for the signing of Lacina Traore this January. The Ivory Coast centre forward is thought to be of long term interest to Rodgers, who could move for the player to add attacking support to his squad over the second half of the season.
