Boffins from Bloomberg Sports have given British sides virtually no hope of winning the Champions League this season.
The boffins give Barcelona the best chance of winning the tournament (21.3%) with current champions Bayern Munich second favourites (18.9%) and Real Madrid third favourites (16.7%).
Chelsea’s is the best rating that any British side has received with Manchester City given a 7.2% chance and Manchester United receiving a 6.4% chance. Arsenal and Celtic have effectively been given no hope.
The method which Bloomberg’s people have come up with mixes data from past performances, transfer deals from the summer and the group draw of each side to produce a percentage chance of each club to win the tournament.
Chelsea start their Champions League campaign this evening with a difficult match against FC Basel, the side they defeated on their way to the Europa League title last season.
Despite the fact Chelsea are going for their third European trophy in as many seasons this campaign, not many are giving them a chance at getting close with statistical analysis now backing up the doubters.
The Blues also have one of the best tactical brains in the business in the form of Jose Mourinho despite the little bit of flack the Portuguese coach has received following the 1-0 defeat to Everton last weekend.
Manchester United and Manchester City will be confident of their chances of at least getting into the knock out rounds of the tournament following winning starts to their campaigns.
Arsenal and Celtic start their quests for European glory tonight along with the Blues.
What do you think? Have the boffins got it wrong?
