Arsenal have been voted as the British team likely to go the furthest in the Champions League this season.
The Goal.com poll put the simple question to fans everywhere and it seems Arsenal’s recent signing of Mesut Ozil and some of their attacking football this season has changed the usual scepticism attached to Arsene Wenger’s side in Europe.
Arsenal also showed they can tactically outwit any side in Europe with a superb 2-0 away win last season against eventual winners Bayern Munich. The Gunners currently have just over 38% of the vote.
Chelsea will certainly benefit from having Jose Mourinho in charge, a manager who has previously won this tournament with very different sides and they do have one of the best squads of talented, creative players in Europe.
Chelsea are currently sitting on just under 29% of the vote as they look to secure a third European trophy in as many seasons.
Manchester United have been voted third most likely from England to win the tournament, despite scepticism over David Moyes’ inexperience in this competition.
United have struggled over the last couple of years in this tournament but back-to-back finals in 2008 and 2009 before another final appearance in 2011 shows they have the infrastructure and discipline to do well. United have a quarter of the current votes.
Manchester City secured a solid 3-0 away win in Plzen last night, as they banished recent negative memories of poor away nights in Europe. Manuel Pellegrini can rival Wenger and Mourinho in terms of experience but the fans remain unconvinced.
Only 6% of the current vote believes that City will progress furthest out of all the British sides in the competition.
Propping up all of the Premier League sides are Scottish champions Celtic with just under 2% of the vote.
Celtic is one of the most difficult places for any side in Europe to travel to. Barcelona found that out last season and Celtic Park creates possibly the best atmosphere on a European night in the entire United Kingdom.
However, Celtic are expected to struggle should they progress to the last 16.
