The best £5 million Arsenal ever spent?

Aaron Ramsey

Aaron Ramsey seems to be in the form of his life, and Arsenal's investment in him looks a sound one.

Arsenal paid a total of £5m to Cardiff City for Aaron Ramsey when he was 17-years-old, now at the age of 22, it’s looking like a snip.

Manager Arsene Wenger said of Ramsey when he first signed him: ‘He has already shown that he is a very intelligent and mature player with great quality.’

Currently, Ramsey is in the form of his life. At the start of the season, a lot was said about Arsenal’s midfield being a weak point, though the Welshman has stepped up to the mark.

He was instrumental in Arsenal’s Champions League play-off win against Fenarbahce immediately after Arsenal were portrayed as some kind of crisis club after their opening day defeat to Aston Villa. Someone in the middle of the Arsenal midfield needed to step up, Ramsey has done that and has relished the challenge.

The promise that he arrived at Arsenal with now seems to be on display with some good performances on a regular basis, including his brace against Sunderland at the weekend.

In all competitions Ramsey has five goals to his name this season, more than in any other season of his Arsenal career. Arsenal fans may have seen some flashes of this ability in the final third, now his performances are more consistent it would seem.

It hasn’t been all plane sailing for the man from Caerphilly, as everyone knows about the unfortunate time when he broke his leg against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium in 2010, after a long recovery he returned to Cardiff for a short spell to get some match practice.

He may have had his fair share of criticism along the way as well, coming back from an injury combined with a young age means that top class performances aren’t always going to come week in, week out when at a team like Arsenal the pressure to perform well in the middle of the park is huge.

Now he seems to be a bit wiser, and the success of Ramsey so far this season has strengthened the case of Arsene Wenger’s transfer policy of buying young players and developing them at the club. He may have signed as a mature player, but he has grown up a great deal in the heart of Arsenal's midfield.
