Liverpool could have signed a player like Kagawa

Heinrich Mkhitaryan

Liverpool's top summer target Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been likened to Manchester United's Shinji Kagawa for his role in the new Borussia Dortmund side.

Tomorrow the whole world will see what a great player Liverpool tried to sign - only to see him decide the Bundesliga was a better option instead.

German football club Borussia Dortmund’s newest weapon Henrikh Mkhitaryan will get to show his talent against Napoli tomorrow night in one of the most glamorous clashes of the Champions League’s first round.

Mkhitaryan will also show that he is as good as Shinji Kagawa, or even better - for that is the comparison levelled

Liverpool’s management who were strongly linked with the Armenian international three month ago, but could not get a deal done..

Now Mkhitaryan is in Dortmund and has been praised by the club as being the next Shinji Kagawa. Kagawa, who hasn’t found his rhythm under David Moyes management was a star under Dortmund’s Jürgen Klopp and a firm crowd favourite - earning his move to Manchester United.

General Manager Hans-Joachim Watzke said about the comparison: “Mkhitaryan like Kagawa is a classic number 10...and a player with a great amount of respect within his team."

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is dangerous through the middle, posing a goalscoring threat just like Dortmund used to have with the Japanese international.

Mkhitaryan also passes the ball with deadly effect, making 10 key passes in his opening four games. In just his last two Bundesliga games the Armenian international has scored three goals and has one assist.

Dortmund’s manager Jürgen Klopp said about his new attacking midfielder: “In front of the goal he is a weapon. He has a terrific shooting technique”

What do you think? Have Liverpool really missed out?
