Arsenal may be heavily fancied to go and get a result in France tomorrow evening but it’s not going to be an easy match for the Gunners because Marseille have players who can hurt them all over the pitch.
One major threat is Dimitri Payet, a 26-year-old attacking midfielder who can play multiple positions across the middle of his team and a player who is bang in form heading into the first round of Champions League group games.
Payet has bagged three goals in five league matches this season, with 2.6 shots on goal per game and 1.6 key passes per league game on average.
What makes him so dangerous to the Gunners is that versatility because he can play attacking midfield roles to the left or right of the side as well as through the spine of the team.
He’s good on the ball and utilises his pace well which means Arsenal are probably best off containing him rather than hunting, trying to throw tackles in and win the ball back.
Arsenal can contain him by cutting off the supply to him from other areas of the team with basic defensive discipline that makes it difficult for Marseille to move the ball quickly.
Payet only moved to Marseille from Lille this summer, which means he’s going to be very determined to get off to a good start with the club in Europe’s main club tournament.
How do you think the Gunners should contain him?
