Manchester United morning news: Striker nears exit; Barca defender linked on a free

A select round-up of news relating to Manchester United, including Federico Macheda, Wayne Rooney and Martin Montoya.

He may have announced himself at Manchester United in some style, scoring the goals against Aston Villa and Sunderland that ultimately helped secure a hard-fought Premier League title. But four years later, Federico Macheda is further away from the first team than ever before, and having long been linked with a move to Doncaster Rovers, it appears a loan move is all but complete.

The Doncaster Free Press is reporting that the 22-year-old Italian striker is on the verge of joining the Championship side in an attempt to kick-start a heavily-stalled career.

In other transfer news, United have been added to the list of clubs linked with Barcelona defender Martin Montoya. The full-back is in the final year of his contract, and reports from across Europe claim United may make a move for the free agent next summer as cover in their full-back positions.

Montoya is predominantly a right-back, but can also play on the left if required. With the arrivals of Guillermo Varela and Saidy Janko this summer, and with Rafael, Fabio, Alex Buttner and Patrice Evra already in place, it remains to be seen if United need more cover in those positions from a player without significant age and experience.

And finally, David Moyes has set Wayne Rooney a target of 30 goals this season, after seeing the England striker net his first of the campaign against Crystal Palace.

Hopefully we can make that happen,” Moyes told the Guardian, also confirming that Rooney would not be used in midfield this season.
