Manchester City latest: Huge defensive boost and Webb to referee derby

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad…

Manchester City have received a huge boost following Vincent Kompany’s inclusion in the Champions League squad to face Viktoria Plzen tomorrow evening.

The Belgian defender has been missing through injury since the opening game of the season. But it seems City’s defensive crisis has eased considerably with the captain joining Matija Nastasic back in the match-day squad.

However, Manuel Pellegrini has a decision to make, with the Manchester derby less than a week away and Kompany a vital component of next Sunday’s team.

In further team news, David Silva, Gael Clichy and Micah Richards are all doubts for the match in the Czech Republic, while Martin Demichelis is ruled out with a knee injury.

As City prepare for their upcoming fixtures, it has been announced that Howard Webb will take charge of the derby at the Etihad.

It will be the first time Webb has refereed such an occasion since 2010. But there is sure to be some consternation among City fans with the referee criticised by opposition supporters for apparently favouring United in the past.

And finally, Leighton Baines has revealed to Everton TV that Gareth Barry’s City teammates were surprised by his summer switch to Goodison Park.

The City lads on the last international break were saying that they can’t believe that they haven’t kept him and he doesn’t play for them,” Baines said.

And the way he performed in the Toffees’ 1-0 win over Chelsea at the weekend, their surprise was warranted.
