Chelsea odds slashed to into 8/1 to win Champions League

Mourinho Dugout

Bayern Munich are favourites, as there are odds for this week's Champions League matches, the tournament outright, individual groups outright, top scorer and top assist markets.

With the Champions League group stage starting this week, there seems to be a lot of support for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea lifting the European Cup for the second time this season, with BoyleSports cutting their price from 12/1 to 8/1.

Leon Blanche, head of communications at BoyleSports said: “Punters believe that Jose Mourinho can guide Chelsea to win the 2013/14 Champions League title after his return to Stamford Bridge and the Blues are currently 1/3 to win Group E Outright.”

Chelsea’s group could partly explain why they are the favourites amongst the British sides in the competition with Manchester United at 14’s, Manchester City at 16’s and Arsenal at 25’s. Celtic's chances seem slim with odds of 600/1.

Mourinho’s side come up against Schalke, Basel and Steaua Bucharest in Group E whilst the other British sides have more challenging draws on paper.

Arsenal face last season’s finalists Borussia Dortmund, Rafa Benitez’s Napoli who have made a 100% start to their Serie A campaign, and Marseille. It leaves Arsenal at 9/4 to top the group.

Manchester United and Manchester City both have relatively tricky groups but are strongly fancied to come through.

United who have the challenge of Bayer Leverkusen, Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Sociedad are 8/11 to top their group.

City, who have defending champions Bayern Munich in their group are 2/1 to top the group and are strongly fancied to qualify this time ahead of CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen.

Leon Blanche added: “Boylesports is offering 25/1 that Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea all win their groups outright.”

That price incidentally, is the same as Celtic’s price to win their group, which consists of European giants Barcelona, AC Milan and Ajax. The clubs combined have 16 European Cups between them.

For the outright winners away from the UK, Bayern Munich are 7/2 favourites to defend their title whilst Barcelona are at 9/2, with Real Madrid at 5/1.

Last season’s runners up in Borussia Dortmund are 18/1 to go one better. People might have a few raised eyebrows at that price given their 100% start to the Bundesliga season but since they have been drawn in the ‘Group of Death’ it may have a lengthened their price.

In other markets, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi unsurprisingly leads the betting for top scorer at 11/4. Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid is priced at 7/2 whilst Bayern Munich’s Mario Mandzukic price of 10/1 looks healthy. There is no strong favourite for the top assists market with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard the shortest price at 12/1.
