Manchester United's outcast loanee came up against a player his club nearly signed this summer
It is his third loan move away from United, with manager David Moyes telling the 23-year-old he was not in his first team plans for the season.
His side took on one of the two teams to finish above them last season, Benfica.
And Bebe went up against a player who could almost have been a United teammate of his, Ezequiel Garay.
The Argentine centre-back was said to have been on the verge of joining United, with a deal agreed in principle prior to Moyes' arrival, but the manager elected not to go through with the deal.
In Saturday's clash there was only one winner, and it was not Bebe.
Garay scored an improbable two goals as Benfica ran out 3-1 winners, and while Bebe lasted the 90 minutes he failed to make any kind of telling impact on the game.
Of Garay's two goals, his second is a must-watch. His first was a poacher's strike from a set piece, but his second was a thumping header from a corner of which you are unlikely to see a better one all season long.
Bebe can be seen looking out of breath in the lead up to the second...
