Spanish fans want to find Chelsea loanee a wife, to make him stay in the country

Marko Marin

Sevilla fans have come up with a bizarre if in some ways logical idea to try and keep Marko Marin away from Chelsea for a long time.

Hailed as the 'German Messi', Marko Marin arrived at Chelsea with a huge billing - and never got even close to living up to a reputation like that.

Out of favour with Roberto di Matteo - and his start delayed by injury, by time he got his chances under Rafa Benitze he appeared off the pace and could not force his way into the side.

With the exciting duo of Kevin de Bruyne and Andre Schurrle incoming, Marin was cast aside by Chelsea this summer and sent on loan to Sevilla.

The 24-year-old grabbed the headlines by ruining Rio Ferdinand's testimonial with a two goal show for his new club, and has impressed early on in La Liga.

In two starts so far he has one assists, and wears the number seven shirt at the club - a show of faith placed in him which he only could have dreamed of at Chelsea.

Sevilla coach Unai Emery said of him, "He has an incredible talent and a breakneck speed. He is the player who makes the difference."

He is proving a hit with fans too, who are so taken with him they have hatched a cunning plan to get him to want to stay at the club long-term.

German newspaper Bild claim that Sevilla fans are trying to help the single German player find a wife in Spain, aiding their chances of helping the wing wizard to choose to stay at the club permanently, rather than returning to London or his homeland in Germany.

The paper report: "They do not want to give back the former international player, a crazy idea has now emerged. Necessity is the mother of invention!

"Seville fans had a "binding" idea - "priority not to get a central defender or striker, but to find a Spanish fiancé for Marko Marin!"

"This worked already at midfield star Rakitic (formerly FC Schalke). The Croat was in Seville, found a woman and remained - despite good offers."

It's certainly thinking outside the box, and we'd encourage Marin to enjoy himself - but a word of warning to Sevilla fans, if he has a sensational season, he might still head back to Chelsea to prove himself, and take one of the city's best women with him.
