Chelsea weekend round-up: Barkley linked and Vitesse agreement threatened

All the news and gossip from the weekend at Stamford Bridge.

Everton and Chelsea played out a tense and exciting encounter at Goodison Park on Saturday evening.

Chelsea sprung a surprise by starting Samuel Eto’o and he had an early chance to open his Chelsea account with a grazing header, but he failed to trouble Tim Howard.

His next chance looked all like it would be his first goal for the club. After a mistake by Tim Howard Andre Schurrle squared the ball to the Cameroonian who had an empty goal to aim at, but Everton debutant Gareth Barry scrambled back to make a key interception.

But despite the Chelsea dominance Everton took the lead on the stroke of half time. Good work out wide from Ross Barkley and Leon Osman saw a ball clipped in high to the far-post which Nikica Jelavic nodded back into the danger zone - and there stood Steven Naismith, to give Everton the lead on his 27th birthday.

The second half continued in much the same vein - with Chelsea dominating possession and hurling chances at Tim Howard’s goal. Meanwhile Everton looked dangerous on the break - and David Luiz might have been counting himself lucky to stay on the pitch after hauling down Mirallas in the final ten minutes.

In fact Leighton Baines almost sealed a 2-0 win with a curling free-kick that hit the bar late on.

And despite all of Chelsea’s huffing and puffing they just could not bag an equalising goal - and Everton won their first game of the season, condemning Chelsea to their first defeat.

Jose Mourinho was aghast at the result - blaming Chelsea’s ineptitude in front of goal despite having 22 attempts as the reason for the defeat.

Gary Cahill says he can be the new John Terry for England and Chelsea. The player recently shone against Ukraine for his country and is now ready to push on this season.

“I’ve played in the big games and I’ve done well. For me, it’s about consistently churning out performances and looking to improve at the same time. Hopefully, I’ve got rid of the question marks over whether I can play at the top level.”

Chelsea have been linked with Ross Barkley this weekend. The youngster, compared to former Blue Michael Ballack by Roberto Martinez, has been in impressive form this season and is also being linked with Manchester United.

Chelsea’s loan agreement with Vitesse Arnhem is to be investigated by Dutch officials after several high-profile complaints in the media in recent days.

Chelsea have six players currently playing for the Dutch outfit.
