Özil: Arsenal can challenge for the title

Mesut Özil believes that Arsenal can challenge for the title this season, the German midfielder moved to the club on deadline day from Real Madrid for a club record fee.

‘Of course (we can challenge for the title). This is one of the biggest clubs in the world’

He was speaking in his first press conference as an Arsenal player and also stated his happiness at being at the club and showed his admiration for manager Arsene Wenger.

Ozil said: ‘It feels great (to be an Arsenal player). I feel very good here and it is great to be part of this team.’

‘The boss is great - I am sure he will improve me and this is why I came here.’ He admitted that he had spoken to Arsenal's German contingent before signing.

‘I talked to Mertesacker and Podolski about the Club. I've only heard positive things'

The 24-year old was looking forward to playing in the Premier League for the first time

'I've watched a lot of Premier League games, of course it's very physical but this is a man's sport, I'm in the strongest league in the world.’

Özil took part in his first training session with the squad this morning and is in contention for a start against Sunderland at the weekend.

Despite some rumours about leaving Real Madrid on a bad note, Ôzil refused to criticise his former team and made clear he had ‘three wonderful years’ in Spain and looked forward to ‘making the next step'.

Manager Arsene Wenger was full of praise for his new signing, as he explained that Özil will have no trouble fitting into the Arsenal team.

‘Özil has a style that will integrate our style of play. He has all the attributes to be one of our leaders.’

But Wenger didn’t confirm that he will start his record signing against Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

‘I haven't decided, but there is a possibility Ozil could start.’
