Every side needs their characters, Kolo Toure seems to be the biggest at Liverpool
Kolo Toure has said that team spirit will be the key this season at Anfield if Liverpool are to have a successful season, and that he wasn’t worried about losing his starting place in the side.
Liverpool have signed several centre-backs, Toure included, and Martin Skrtel has shown signs of rediscovering his best form when replacing the Reds number four.
Even though he has only played three competitive games during his time at Anfield so far, Toure seems to have won the hearts of many Liverpool fans. What the club has got from Toure isn’t typical of what you’d get for a free transfer.
Usually you get the old head, someone to talk the younger players through tricky situations and pass on words of wisdom. You do get that with Toure, but he goes about his business as if he was 23-years-old rather than 32.
He is a huge character and passion seems to run through him when he takes to the field. He was the first man to race to Simon Mignolet when he saved a penalty on the first day of the season. In fact, he may have even kissed him, and I’m sure we’ll see more of his crazy runs up field as he will look to get on the scoresheet a few times this season.
That reaction to Mignolet's save was after he punched the ground in fury that Liverpool had managed to give away a penalty in the dying minutes of the game against Stoke City.
Even Brendan Rodgers couldn’t help but raise a smile when asked about the impact the Ivorian had on the club in his press conference ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Aston Villa a few weeks ago.
And with his interview this week with the club’s website, he seems to have warmed to his surroundings, even mentioning the club’s fans.
“I really enjoy it when I see them [the fans] every day. I can feel their support and I can feel they love the club. That's great.”
It’s not hard to see why the fans love him, and even if he doesn’t hang on to a first team place this year, his energy around the dressing room could be a vital part to any success Liverpool may have this season.
