Brendan Rodgers probably wouldn’t have been expecting Liverpool to have such a great start to the season, with so many new players coming in and with the club’s star centre forward still suspended.
However, Liverpool have made themselves a target as the team to topple at the top of the Premier League and the next side lining up to have a go at the Reds is Rodgers’ former club Swansea City.
What sort of team will Rodgers take into the fixture?
GK – Simon Mignolet
Mignolet has become an instant favourite with Liverpool fans after signing in the summer. He’s not the complete package just yet but he wears his heart on his sleeve and has so far made the correct decisions at the important times during matches.
RB – Andre Wisdom
With Glen Johnson out injured, this is a real chance for Wisdom to stake his claim for a regular place in the Liverpool starting side. He will be better for the experience of having led his country at Under-21 level and Rodgers should feed him this opportunity to make the most of that excitement.
CB – Martin Skrtel
Skrtel was superb in the win over Manchester United and he should start regardless of his recent past with Rodgers. The manager has always maintained that players will be rewarded for good performances and consistency which makes it difficult to see how the Slovakian can possibly be dropped.
CB – Daniel Agger
Agger has been one of the only constants in Liverpool’s side this season. He’s showing just why Barcelona started sniffing around him in the summer. His decision making his been superb and he gets Liverpool going, feeding the midfield well after breaking down an opposition attack.
LB – Jose Enrique
Enrique currently controls the left back role at the club and there are no signs he’s going to start making mistakes soon. His defensive game is solid and he’s productive in the final third which is all Rodgers can ask for.
RM – Jordan Henderson
It will be tempting for Rodgers to start Raheem Sterling but Henderson has been playing well, which makes it important to try and fit him into the side. Don’t expect him to be glued to the right wing. He will move about and change positions with other players.
CM – Lucas
Lucas remains one of the best holding players for the club and one of the best in the Premier League. He links the defence and the midfield well and has good distribution skills which are useful when Liverpool need to move the ball quickly and counter attack.
CM – Steven Gerrard
Liverpool’s skipper will be slightly drained following his performances for England but he should have enough time to recover. Gerrard’s game doesn’t need to be sold and his leadership will be useful if Swansea have spells where they dominate possession.
CM – Philippe Coutinho
Coutinho will be the man most likely to break from the midfield to play the number ten role, supporting a main striker. He’s not been at his best this season with teams finding ways to keep him quiet so the challenge for him will be to reinvent himself slightly.
LM – Victor Moses
Don’t be at all surprised to see Moses thrown straight in at the deep end by Rodgers. His pace out wide will be crucial when Liverpool counter attack and he’s playing with a point to prove, in the same way Daniel Sturridge played when he first joined the club from Chelsea.
ST – Daniel Sturridge
Sturridge should feature after shaking off a thigh problem that threatened to keep him out of this game. It's a stroke of bad luck for Iago Aspas but Sturridge's form this season means he has to play.
Liverpool fans, who do you think should be starting?
