Brother of Tottenham disappointment: 'He was wrong to join'

Gio dos Santos should not have joined Tottenham Hotspur, according to his brother.

When Real Madrid take on Villareal this weekend, Giovani dos Santos will have an opportunity to get one over on former Spurs teammate Gareth Bale.

Bale is expected to make his debut, and Dos Santos, an ex-Barcelona man, would surely love nothing more than to steal the spotlight and turn some of the headlines his way.

It does not seem so long ago that the Mexican forward was Barcelona's next star, making inroads into the first team and rated as one of the brightest young talents at the club.

Then in 2008 he signed for Tottenham, seen as a real coup for the club, but he did not blossom under Harry Redknapp's management and ended up being loaned out to Ipswich Town.

It was clear to see his talent, which he regularly displayed for the Mexican national team, but at club level Dos Santos did not continue his potential, and ended up sold on deadline day last season to Mallorca, before signing for newly promoted Villareal this summer.

His brother Jonathan Dos Santos is just one year younger at 23, and remains at Barcelona. He himself has played just 12 games for the club but maintains he believes he still has a future at the Nou Camp.

After a summer in which he was regularly linked away, his optimism is to be admired.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper Sport yesterday he claimed his brother should also have stuck it out at Barcelona.

"You have to have patience in this club. Players are standing out at 24 or 25. I can play here, I have qualities, but I have to work and learn from my peers.

"Gio has been going great for two years I think he was wrong to leave the club; here he could have played, but he made that decision and has no regrets."

Gio dos Santos does likely regret the way it panned out at Tottenham, but his brother is right in that taking the leap should not be something he looks back on with anger, even if he feels he should not have done it.

The ex-Spurs man will feel glad he gave it a shot, while Jonathan Dos Santos if he does not ever make it at Barcelona may one day regret not moving on sooner.

Why did it not work out for Dos Santos at Spurs?
