Germany went into Wednesday evening's game one win from World Cup qualification.
And the fact their opponents in their upcoming match were minnows the Faroe Islands made it in most people's eyes a foregone conclusion.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was that it took the Germans 23 minutes to break the deadlock.
And it was not one of their illustrious attackers Toni Kroos or Julian Draxler who scored the opener.
Nor was it Arsenal's new £42.4 million signing Mesut Ozil. Instead it was Per Mertesacker, recently derided in the German press as the most likely defender to be dropped, netting his first international goal since last October.
It was not a contender for goal of the month, nor would you expect that from Mertesacker. Instead it was a ruthless half-volley from inside the six-yard box, after a cross from fellow defender Jerome Boateng.
