The fact Liverpool are not playing in any European competition this season makes Luis Suarez one of the most attractive January transfer window buys on the market, given the fact he will not be cup-tied for the second half of the season.
He is already once again being connected with a blockbuster transfer to Real Madrid, touted as one of two potential 'top strikers' the club are considering moving for.
The other is prolific Colombian striker Falcao, who left Madrid's rivals Atletico in a €60 million summer move to Monaco.
His contract there is said to include a 'big club' release clause, which would allow Real to sign him, and there is suspicion Monaco are being used as a loophole to circumvent a blocked transfer route between Atletico and Real.
Spanish newspaper Marca this week ran an article stating that the two forwards were Real's top January targets, and asked fans which one they would prefer.
Approximately 20,000 responded, and the responses were weighted heavily in favour of Falcao, rather than Liverpool's Luis Suarez.
Falcao attracted 73.2 per cent of the vote, more than two-thirds, and it's clear from this who Real Madrid supporters would rather see lead the attack next season.
They could be in luck, as Falcao is represented by agent Jorge Mendes, who also happens to represent none other than Real's star man Cristiano Ronaldo.
We are sure fans would not moan if they spent big on Luis Suarez, but clearly they would prefer a man who they watched at close hand score prolifically for their rivals.
Marca is regarded as Real Madrid's newspaper, and the club's hierarchy surely will have taken note of the response.
This could well be good news for Liverpool who may not have to fend off bids for the striker from Real in January, but could work in Arsenal's favour if they renew their interest as has been speculated, even though Liverpool are even less likely to sell mid-season to a rival.
