A fringe full back at Camp Nou is fast approaching the expiration of his current contract.
Barcelona fringe player Martin Montoya, a Mini Estadi graduate currently playing second fiddle to rampaging wing back Daniel Alves, will be out of contract at the end of this season but, with a number of elite-level European clubs interested in the 22-year-old's signature, the defender will not be out of options.
'For the moment he is under contract with Barcelona until the end of the season however, the contract extension has still not arrived,' Jose Maria Orobitg, the player's agent, is quoted to have said by Sky Italia.
Despite Montoya's continued development, the off-form Alves was selected more often last season, a motif that appears likely to persist in the current campaign. With playing time limited, Orobitg may advise his client to commit to a club where he is more likely to be the first choice player in his position.
'We have talked but there is no certainty that Martin Montoya would hold down a first-team spot, because right now Daniel Alves closes the door. The transfer window is closed, but I can tell you that the contract extension may not be successful.
'In the past, Inter Milan, Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen, Dortmund and Liverpool were interested. Anything could happen between now and June.'
Arsenal are also reportedly interested in Montoya.
