Ozil: I would have joined Arsenal on a free

The Germany international playmaker has switched from Real Madrid to the north London club and has spoken of his desire to win trophies.

Mesut Ozil’s move from Real Madrid to Arsenal in a club record £42.5 million deadline day deal was just the tonic that frustrated Gunners fans needed after a quiet summer in the transfer market.

The capture of the former Werder Bremen schemer is adjudged by many as the coup of the summer, with the 24-year-old one of the best in his position in the world game.

Due to the late nature of the transfer and Ozil being on international duty, there have been limited chances for the midfielder to discuss the deal.

However, a new interview with German media outlet Die Welt will get Arsenal fans very excited about his arrival at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger, a manager who has been subject to so much subjection and disdain from the media and even the club’s supporters, will also read Ozil’s comments with a smile on his face.

Ozil admitted that it was a last-gasp call from the French coach that convinced him to move to the north London side.

“Somehow this telephone call just flicked a switch in me," Ozil admitted.

"I thought: 'What he is telling me is what I have missed at Real: transparency, trust, respect. He told me exactly how he sees me [as a player], how he wants to use me, what he expects from me and what he hopes I will contribute."

The Arsenal fans will hope that Ozil’s arrival will be the required spark needed to see the club fight for honours once more. It has been eight years since the Gunners’ last trophy and the German is eager to end the drought.

"I want to win titles and will do everything in order to do that. That is my mentality,” he continued.

"We will do everything to get as far as possible in all the competitions. I learned that at Real. I don't go into any competitions saying: 'The aim us to reach the semi-finals or the final.' When I play, I want to win."

Finally, much will be expected of Ozil given his significant ability but also the magnitude of the transfer fee splurged by the Premier League side. However, the attacker has stated that the fee does not bother him.

“I did not even have time to pack so my dad is sorting all that out," he said, before adding: "The transfer fee has nothing to do with me. I would have joined Arsenal on a free."

Ozil is widely expected to make his Arsenal debut against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
