Manchester United morning news: New number 9 identified; Zaha on England hopes

A select round-up of news relating to Manchester United, including Wilfried Zaha, Jonny Evans and Christian Benteke.

The transfer window may be well and truly closed, but that hasn’t stopped the Mirror claiming Manchester United may move for Christian Benteke in the future.

The Aston Villa striker only signed an improved deal in July, but reports claim David Moyes has scouted the Belgian and sees him as the perfect candidate for United’s vacant number 9 shirt.

With the long-term future of Wayne Rooney still unknown, and with Robin van Persie now in his 30s, Benteke could be the perfect addition to the United squad if and when Moyes looks to revamp his forward line.

In international news, Wilfried Zaha has called on his England under-21 teammates to be more ruthless in front of goal. The United winger was one of a number of players who wasted chances during the 1-0 win over Moldova, and he knows he cannot afford to be as wasteful when he faces Finland tonight.

And finally, Jonny Evans has praised Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill. Despite a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign, Evans and his teammates have performed well in recent games against Portugal, and the United defender has high hopes for the next qualifying campaign for Euro 2016.

There is a really good spirit among the squad,” he said.
