News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.
Manchester United are ‘keen’ to offer Wayne Rooney a new contract, following a summer of speculation over the England number 10’s future.
With his current £250,000-a-week deal expiring in the summer of 2015, it is thought the club will re-open negotiations with the striker over an improved contract to keep the 27-year-old at Old Trafford ‘well into his thirties’.
New signing Marouane Fellaini admits he is ‘nervous’ but believes United can retain the title this season.
“It is a big step for me. But I have played five years in England, I know the league and I know the players so I don't think I will have a problem with this move,” explained the Belgian midfielder.
“It will be tough, every year is tough for the big teams but I think Manchester United has the quality to win the championship so I look forward to this.”
United legend Paddy Crerand believes Fellaini’s signing will be ‘powerful’ for manager David Moyes’ midfield and compared the 25-year-old to Manchester City’s Yaya Toure.
“I’m delighted United have signed Marouane Fellaini and I think most fans should be too, because the one thing we’ve lacked at Manchester United in the middle of the park is somebody powerful and strong," said Crerand.
"I wouldn’t want [Manchester City’s Yaya] Toure playing against me; a big powerful guy, hard to compete with. We’ve got one of our own now."
Another legend, Henning Berg also believes Fellaini’s signing is forward-thinking, and is excited at the prospect of his combination work with Robin van Persie.
“He’s got great potential, and if he’s consistent with his best level, he will be a fantastic signing," Berg told MUTV.
"He can play so play different positions, he’s a good footballer but there’s something about him. He can get players around him, he can control and dominate games, and I think United have too few players who can do that. That’s why I think he will be a great signing.”
Meanwhile, United target Fabio Coentrao vowed to fight for his place at Real Madrid, the club he described as ‘the best in the world’, despite a ‘collapsed’ move to Old Trafford on deadline day.
“There was the possibility of joining Manchester United, but I stayed at Real Madrid, and that’s what matters,” said the Portuguese fullback.
“It would have been bad if I had to stay despite having the chance to move to a better club, but that didn’t happen as I already am at the best club in the world.”
'I want to do better than I did last season, although I was at a very high level already. I want to show everyone that I deserve to be at Real Madrid,” he added.
In transfer news, United are linked with Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, according to reports inThe Mirror.
In other news, Robin van Persie’s goal against Fulham was voted Goal of the Month for August in a fan poll undertaken via the club’s official website.
Manchester United youngster Wilfried Zaha is ‘poised’ for a return to his former club Crystal Palace on Saturday when United travel to Selhurst Park to face the Eagles.
