Chelsea weekend round-up: Lampard closes on 100th England cap and Courtois rumours

A round up of the important news stories about Chelsea from this weekend.

England captain Steven Gerrard has piled the praise onto Frank Lampard. Lampard will win his 100th cap for England if he appears against Ukraine this Tuesday as England look to maintain their position at the top of Group H as they seek to qualify for the World Cup next summer.

The man himself says England will need to be at the top of their game if they’re to have any chance of securing a result on Tuesday.

“We've got to go out on Tuesday and get a result. It's in our own hands with two home games to come after that,” said Lampard.

In transfer news, Thibaut Courtois continues to be linked with a move to Barcelona. The young Belgian is currently on loan at Atletico Madrid and is considered the natural successor to Petr Cech in the first team when the Czech international retires or moves on.

Chelsea youngster Nathaniel Chalobah is set to return to Watford on loan with Hornets boss Gianfranco Zola confirming the club are still looking for players.

“We can’t offer what other clubs can in terms of money, but I think we can attract players. Nathaniel knows what we are and Chelsea know the type of work we do,” said the Italian.

Manchester United are reportedly set to offer striker Wayne Rooney a new contract which could prevent a third bid from Chelsea. The Blues had two bids for the forward rejected over the summer, with speculation they could have another go at signing Rooney in January or next summer.

New signing Willian has revealed the main reason behind his decision to move to Stamford Bridge was Jose Mourinho.

“I will work with Mourinho who is the best manager and I will grow a lot with him – the opportunity to play with Mourinho, the best manager in the world, also made a lot of difference,” said the forward.

One player the Blues weren’t able to tempt to West London this summer was German teenager Julian Draxler. Draxler says he decided to stay at FC Schalke in order to play regular games and maintain his chances of securing a place in Germany’s World Cup squad for next summer.

Chelsea’s decision to send six players on loan to Vitesse Arnhem this season hasn’t gone down well in the Netherlands. Several representatives from Eredivisie sides have criticised the number of Chelsea players at the club drawing comparisons with the number of Udinese players on loan with Watford last season.

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has revealed how the Blues tried to sign him in 2005. Toure was playing club football in Ukraine at the top and reports at the time suggested Didier Drogba was the reason a deal never happened but Toure insists that wasn’t the case.
