The France international is in the last year of his contract and may well move on from the north London club this summer.
One player who’s future is unclear at Arsenal is Bacary Sagna. Despite reports that the north London club are set to offer him a new deal, the France international is in the last year of his contract and has admitted to be unsettled at the club in the past.
Although Arsene Wenger will want to keep Sagna at the Emirates Stadium outfit, there is no guarantee that Arsenal will not be looking for a replacement soon.
Here are five players on the continent that Wenger should be keeping a close eye on.
Lukasz Piszczek – Borussia Dortmund
Piszczek has all the traits and attributes that Arsene Wenger looks for in a potential transfer target. The Poland international is young, quick, good with the ball at his feet and has excellent positional sense.
The eastern European full-back has been an unsung hero in Borussia Dortmund’s rise to prominence over recent years and is a consistent performer. The Gunners have been linked with him in the past and he would fit straight into the north London club’s starting XI.
Atsuto Uchida – Schalke
The 25-year-old Japanese defender has looked like an accomplished character since moving to Schalke from his homeland in 2010 and is now an important player for the Bundesliga side. He has Champions League experience and has made over 60 appearances for his national side.
The Asian star is the epitome of a modern full-back, with a tireless work-rate and a natural instinct to pass the ball. His forward runs and link-up play with attacking team-mates has been impressive in his time in Germany.
Jesus Gamez – Malaga
An experience La Liga defender and the oldest on the list at 28, Gamez has played over 250 games in all competitions for Malaga. His reliability and defensive positioning are strengths that have seen him respected in Spain, and he played alongside current Gunner Nacho Monreal at the Andalusian club.
Gamez is probably the least attacking full-back on the list but would be a solid option, with defensive responsibilities his priority. A tenacious tackler, the Spaniard would be one to rely on for Wenger.
Sebastian Jung – Eintracht Frankfurt
Another potential option from the Bundesliga, Jung is one of the most promising young defenders in German football. A very solid defender, Jung plays a prominent role in getting forward and creating chances for team-mates.
Jung has been called up to the senior Germany squad in the past without getting a competitive international cap, but did play for the under-21 side on 19 occasions. At 23, he is ready for a move to progress his career.
Sebastien Corchia – Sochaux
Another young defender that Wenger is said to have scouts following, it is easy to see Corchia making the transition to English football. He is very versatile and would be another attacking option from full-back – he also has excellent delivery from dead balls.
With over 25 appearances for France under-21’s, he was linked with a switch to Lyon over the summer which fell through. It won’t be long before he as at a bigger club.
