"He is close to Arsenal, we’ll see this week. Marica is a very good striker, a Romanian national player who has great experience."
Those were the words of Marica's agent Giovani Becali back in August, hopeful that a deal could be reached for the striker.
Marica, 27, was released by Schalke this summer where he scored six goals last season, and not only did he not sign for Arsenal - He has not signed for anybody and is still searching for a club.
Fascinatingly he remains a first choice for his country, Romania, for who he netted his 22nd international goal on Friday evening in a World Cup qualifier.
Marica scored in just the second minute of the game against Hungary a match they wn 2-0 go close on second place in the group.
He will certainly be happy with his strike, showing his goalpoaching instincts, and also lasted 80 minutes before being taken off, showing that he is not short of match fitness.
While it's doubtful Arsenal would now snap the free agent up at this late stage, you would imagine he has not done himself any harm at all and he will not be without a club for too much longer.
Does he have the goalscorer's instincts worth taking a gamble on?
