Both are very worthy of a new contract, but who do Arsenal feel is more important to offer a new deal to?
Although Mertesacker has put some outstanding performances together at the heart of the Gunners defence, especially when he plays alongside the equally impressive Laurent Koscielny. Bacary Sagna cannot be allowed to leave the club.
There has to be an offer made to Sagna who has given great service to the club and made himself one of the best right backs in the league before he suffered two broken legs in the space of a year.
He has lost a lot of his pace but he has hit a point in his career when playing at centre half will suit him much more than playing at full back, it could even extend his career at the highest level.
It is admirable that Sagna has stayed at Arsenal for so long and shown huge loyalty to the club despite not having won any trophies, we’ve seen other players jump at the chance to leave the club but Sagna has stayed put. There were rumours that he might leave in the summer but nothing ever materialized.
Having his presence in the squad beyond next year would be a very vital because the team is full of young players and over the next few transfer window we can expect to see top quality players coming into the club.
Veterans like Sagna and Mertesacker will be invaluable in the development of the young players, especially the defenders. Realistically Arsenal would be very foolish to not extend either player's contract.
