Manchester City latest: Defender’s absence confirmed; striker linked with Turkey move

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad…

Manchester City have confirmed that new signing Martin Demichelis will be unable to play for around six weeks after sustaining a knee injury.

The Argentinian centre-back was signed during the final days of the transfer window, with manager Manuel Pellegrini seeking a solution to his defensive injury woes. And yet rather than easing them, Demichelis has now added to them.

The former Malaga and Atletico Madrid defender could miss up to six games, including the Manchester derby and City’s first two group matches in this season’s Champions League.

With Matija Nastasic and Joleon Lescott the only two senior central defenders currently fit, Pellegrini will be praying for no further injuries. Either that or Javi Garcia could find himself in the spotlight once more…

Although in all seriousness Jack Rodwell and Dedryck Boyata are more than able deputies should they be called upon in the coming weeks.

One player linked with a move away from the club is John Guidetti, who is reportedly a loan target for Turkish side Trabzonspor.

The Swedish striker is unlikely to feature given the players currently ahead of him at the Etihad, and a short-term move could be the best option for all parties.

And from one Swedish striker to another, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic revealing he turned down the chance to play for City in 2011.

Writing in his autobiography he said, “City could surely become big within a few years. But I’d soon turn 29. I didn’t have time for long-term plans and money was never a big thing. I wanted to go to a club that could be good now and there was no club with a history like AC Milan.”
