Chelsea morning news: Courtois' Champions League desire, Mata pledges future

A round up of the key news stories about Chelsea this morning.

Thibaut Courtois has explained he didn’t return to Chelsea for this season as he didn’t like the prospect of playing second fiddle to Petr Cech.

The talented young shot stopper is currently on loan with Atletico Madrid where he has established a reputation for himself as one of the brightest goalkeeping prospects in European football.

“The club and Jose Mourinho wanted me back this season. The management also thought about loaning me to a Premier League team. But I didn’t like that option, I feel good in Madrid and I wanted to play in the Champions League with Atletico,” said the Belgian.

One player who is very happy to be at Chelsea is midfielder Juan Mata, with the Spaniard pledging his future to the club.

The summer transfer window saw several rumours suggesting Mata was a target for Arsenal and Manchester United but Jose Mourinho stood by his stance that the Spaniard wasn’t for sale.

“I think it's normal in every transfer window that there are lots of rumours but I'm happy here. It's been a very, very good two seasons for me here, maybe the best of my career, and what I want this season is the same,” he told Chelsea TV.

New signing Willian has piled the praise onto boss Jose Mourinho, suggesting he will prosper under the guidance of the Portuguese coach.

Chelsea secured a deal for the 25-year-old ahead of Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer, as he arrived with former side Anzhi Makhachkala looking to move on several players.

Willian says while he expects to become a better player at Chelsea, he’s not taking his first team spot for granted and is determined to work hard to get into the first team.
