Liverpool latest: Including Sterling plea and Johnson fitness

A round up of the latest news stories connected to Liverpool.

Liverpool could find themselves with an opportunity to re-sign former player Xabi Alonso following reports he’s a target for Serie A side Juventus. If the Spaniard became available, the club would surely be interested at the chance to bring him back to Anfield.

Reports are still unclear over defender Glen Johnson’s ankle injury. Johnson had to be taken off during the win against Manchester United following a clash with Patrice Evra and it’s still unknown how long he’s going to be out of action for. The club have not set a timeframe as they further assess the problem.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has since praised Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge for his performance in that 1-0 win, grabbing the vital goal. The forward has started the season in superb form, scoring all of the club’s Premier League goals so far.

However, Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson insists the club’s good start to the season is down to the defence with the Reds yet to concede a goal in the league.

“The clean sheets have also been really pleasing. We were solid at the back in our opening two matches and it was the same again against United,” Henderson told the Liverpool Daily Post.

Henderson has also had his say on Victor Moses who joined the club on loan from Chelsea before the transfer deadline. He’s not been afraid to pile the pressure on top of the forward, insisting that big things are expected from him now he’s a Liverpool player.

The positive start has created some unexpected potential goals for Liverpool, with former midfielder Dietmar Hamann revealing he thinks Liverpool will qualify for the Champions League, despite a very competitive group, by the end of the campaign.

Ahead of England’s World Cup qualifying match against Moldova, Brendan Rodgers has urged Roy Hodgson to work with him and take a little bit of pressure away from winger Raheem Sterling.

“He has shown he’s capable of being here and playing at the top level. For us it’s just about taking the pressure away from him,” said Rodgers.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has said one day he could see himself as the boss at Anfield. Gerrard is widely accepted as a player who completely embodies the ideology of Liverpool and it would certainly be a popular appointment if it ever came about.

In another less mainstream story, reports have suggested that Liverpool’s new signing Tiago Ilori is quicker than Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United’s Nani. A report has suggested that the 20-year-old defender smashed the speed records set by the pair during his youth spell with Sporting Lisbon.
