Italian press source Tuttosport has reported something that Liverpool fans should find very encouraging.
The newspaper has claimed that Serie A giants Juventus are going to make a move to sign Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso in the very near future, despite his recent comments that he doesn’t want to leave Real Madrid.
The effect that Mesut Ozil’s move to Arsenal seems to have had is triggering interest in several Real Madrid players with the idea that they could be tempted away with the right sort of offer and deal.
Liverpool were strongly linked with re-signing their former player at the start of the summer and they should be monitoring this latest rumour very closely for any sign that Alonso could be tempted away from the Bernabeu.
His current contract expires next summer which means if the Spanish giants are not going to offer him a new deal then Florentino Perez will more than likely put pressure on manager Carlo Ancelotti to nudge him towards the exit door.
The chances of that happening are difficult to predict but he’s currently out of action until at last the start of December with a broken metatarsal injury.
By the time he returns just before the winter break in La Liga, Real Madrid are likely to have already adjusted to a system, team and formation which doesn’t include him and if the side are winning games and playing well, Ancelotti has no reason to bring him back quickly.
He’s only 31-years-old which means he will still feel as though he has a tremendous amount to offer rather than accepting that he’s seen better days and settling for a bit part role, starting just once every couple of weeks.
Despite Alonso’s comments suggesting he would not be coming back to the Premier League, he has always maintained a healthy respect and admiration for Liverpool, which is why he still enjoys a very good relationship with the club’s fans.
“The Premier League? No. No way, no chance,” he told reporters in July when questioned on Liverpool and Chelsea rumours.
It seems like a very clear cut and concrete quote but bear in mind Ozil insisted he wouldn’t be leaving Real Madrid shortly before the move to Arsenal came together.
If Juventus move for the 31-year-old and there are signs that he could be tempted into a move away despite what he said in the summer, Liverpool would definitely have a chance of signing him because of his relationship with the club.
The only problem as far as Liverpool are concerned would be the cash that would be needed to make the deal happen.
The fact he only has one-year left on his contract means Liverpool could afford the fee but whether they would accept the wage demands that Alonso would likely demand is debatable. They could hope he would drop them, given the past connection between player and club.
If Alonso does ever leave Real Madrid then Liverpool will more than likely be one of the first clubs that his representatives sound out and that can only be a positive for Brendan Rodgers.
Do you see Alonso ever returning? What sort of deal would it take?
