Wigan Athletic’s Dave Whelan: The deadline day king

Dave Whelan

Wigan's owner can be very pleased with his transfer deadline day business.

If I was a football manager, I would want Dave Whelan to be the owner of my club. Honest, loyal and considerably smarter than he lets on, the 76-year-old understands both the sport and the men who take part in it.

He also knows how to work a transfer deadline day.

The Wigan Athletic owner earned a well-deserved lay-in this morning, after his final day dealings brought Manchester United’s Nick Powell and Stoke City’s Ryan Shotton in on loan. He also found himself in possession of around £14million following the sale of James McCarthy to Everton.

It was cash he attempted to spend, at least in part, with an audacious bid for Blackburn Rovers’ Jordan Rhodes.

That he reportedly offered £6.5million for the Scotland international – £1.5million less than Rovers paid Huddersfield for the player – was either savvy or insane. But while that effort inevitably failed, in holding out for the fee he demanded for McCarthy, Whelan can be pleased with his day’s business.

As can Wigan boss Owen Coyle, who may have lost the impressive McCarthy, but now has a player in Nick Powell who could be one of the revelations of the Championship campaign. Rarely given a chance since his £3million move to Manchester United, Powell was something of a goal-machine for his previous club Crewe Alexandra.

Not just any goals, but spectacular, outside-the-box efforts that concluded with an exquisite effort in the League Two play-off final of 2012.

So while Wigan may have lost a midfielder of real class, they have gained one, too; a different kind of player, but one who can make a real difference as the Latics attempt to return to the top flight at the first attempt.

And when January comes round, they also have a few million to spend should the need arise.

How do Wigan fans feel following deadline day?  Is it a mixture of happiness and sadness, given McCarthy's departure?
