Ex Newcastle United and Rangers midfielder will earn up to £400,000, according to reports.
Paul Gascoigne, 46, a once supremely-gifted attacker who represented Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio and England, is to take part on the Italian version of popular ballroom show Strictly Come Dancing – Ballando Con Le Stele – which begins filming later in the month.
Gascoigne's post-football life has been one perpetually linked with mental illness and substance abuse, however, according to a friend, the former FA Cup and SPL winner believes a spell on reality television will help focus his mind and beat alcohol addiction.
'Paul is fit and is keen to show off his nifty footwork,' said the source to The Sun. 'He believes the show will give him a focus and help him stay off the booze. Paul is determined to stay on the straight and narrow. This high-profile TV appearance will help with that.'
Earlier in the year Gascoigne admitted that he would consider appearing on popular ITV jungle show I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here presented by fellow Geordies; Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.
In 2004, he was due to appear on Strictly Ice Dancing but a late back injury prevented his participation.
